So where did Christianity come from ?

Christianity originated in the first century in the former Roman province of Judea. This province covered an area that is now known as the southern region of modern day Israel. The original philosophical roots are found in Judaism and worship of the God of Abraham. Abraham is a recognized, central figure to Christianity and Islam also today. Leading on from this, Christianity is also referred to as an “Abrahamic” religion.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life” John 3:16

What is it that Christians believe in ?

Followers of Christianity are known as Christians and these followers have the following core beliefs :

This religion is monotheistic in that it only has one god who is all knowing, all seeing and the creator of the heavens and earth, galaxies, stars, universe etc.

This divine Godhead is made up of three parts: the father God himself, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit

Jesus Christ is the son of God and was sent to earth some 2000 plus years ago to be a savior to mankind.

Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross, died and rose again after three days and later ascended to heaven

They believe the purpose of Christs’ death was to be a sacrifice or offer of the forgiveness of sins

Mankind can receive forgiveness for sins by belief and acceptance of the risen Christ

Christians and Jews both embrace the old testament but only Christians accept the new testament.

Christians believe that Jesus will return to earth again in what’s known as the Second Coming

“And the came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene” Matthew 2:23

So, who was Jesus Christ?

Historians believe that Jesus was indeed a real man who was born between 2 B.C. and 7 B.C. According to text in the New Testament of the holy bible, the life of Jesus looks something like this:

Jesus was born to a young Jewish woman named Mary in Bethlehem which is south of modern day Jerusalem today. Christians believe that Marys’ pregnancy was the result of a supernatural event caused by God via the holy spirit.

Scripture reveals he grew up in Nazareth but fled to Egypt after his earthly “father” Joseph had a dream that the King of the day, Herod sought to harm the child. Further, to this, his parents later returned and settled in Nazareth after Joseph had another dream telling him that those that wished to harm him were now dead and the threat was no longer there.

Jesus was raised according to Jewish tradition and custom.

Jesus began a public ministry at around 30 years of age after being baptized in the Jordan river by a biblical prophet named John the Baptist

Jesus eventually had 12 core disciples whom the travelled with for about three years teaching his message to large groups of people. Scripture also reports him as performing miracles such as raising a man from the dead, walking on water, healing physical ailments and restoring sight to the blind.

Much of what scholars know about Jesus comes from the New Testament of the Christian Bible.

“And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.” Matthew 2:15

Why are there so many different denominations of Christianity today?

This bit always interested me. Why are there so many different denominations of Christianity today? What is a denomination?A denomination is a distinct religious group or body within the Christian faith that can be defined by their customs, traditions or doctrine e.g. Catholic as compared to Mormon or Pentecostal.

In 1517, a German monk by the name of Martin Luther wrote and published 95 Theses. These documents criticized the Pope and certain practices of the Catholic church.Luthers’ ideas led to the reformation, a movement that attempted to reform the Catholic church. The end result out of this was that Protestantism was born and hence different denominations of the christian faith began to happen. At present there are three broad groups within Christianity Catholic, Protestant and (eastern) Orthodox. There are multiple denominations under the protestant group and they include, but are not limited to :

  • Presbyterian
  • Pentecostal/Charismatic
  • Baptist
  • Quaker
  • Seventh-Day Adventist
  • Episcopalian
  • Methodist
  • Lutheran
  • Anglican
  • Evangelical
  • Assemblies of God

Although this list is varied, they pretty much all share the same belief and worship in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

What is my view on the Christian faith?

a man praying

My view on the Christian faith is this. I will say unashamedly, the Christian faith is my faith, my love, my rock, my teacher and guiding light. It is my everything in this life. I do have my doubts, struggles and questions at times but deep down inside me I know silently just what it means to me. I think that I would have a pretty “empty” life without it or by ignoring any spiritual aspect/dimension to my life in my time on this earth.

” There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off ” Proverbs 23:18

  1. I you have successfully provided me with more information about my religion. Though am a Christian but I didn’t have a full idea of the origination of christainity and it’s Impact on the world.

I practice my religion by strictly reading the bible, going to church, etc. Now I also have an idea on how Denomination in christainity started and the motive behind it. Thank you Billy

  2. Hi Billy, thank you for giving me the opportunity to visit your site. I see it is easy to navigate and quite interesting.

I find it a bit confusing as to why you have the bible as the first focus you come to when visiting your site. I also do believe the scripture versus John 3:16 was ex-sponged from from the bible mainly because of the word, “Begotten”.

The other part of your site where it comes to relating the Yoga  and types of fighting to the Bible

Your site contains a lot of good articles which are great. Once again Thank you,

  3. Hello Billy,

Wow what an in-depth article about the principles of christianity! I sometimes forget some of these astonishing facts and how the christian church began. I am a part of a baptist church now, but it is much more like an open non-denominational church than a traditional southern baptist. It’s amazing that all of these variations of christianity came about.

I grew up in the catholic church in my home town, and everything was such a forced routine that I eventually rebelled against it. It wasn’t until after my college days that I discovered christ once again in a non-denominational bible church that focused on the holy trinity. Before that, I never really took the time to learn and understand what the new testament would mean to our lives.

After visiting Israel earlier last year, it re-affirmed my faith even more in a way I had never felt before. The reality of seeing places depicted in the bible and speaking to the people that live there was an amazing experience. Thank you also for pointing out that Jesus was also mentioned in the Quran. His influence is amazing and reaches to all ends of the earth. Even those who did not believe in him at least acknowledge that he existed. These written books at that time were the closest forms of proof that we had during that era.

I will continue to seek him and spread the gospel to new believers as much as I can. Thank you for reminding me of how great this christian faith really is.

    1. Hi Daniel, first up let me say a big thanks for your in-depth observations!! It is amazing, isn’t it! I was blown away by some of this information while researching and putting the article together also. Thanks, heaps Daniel, God bless.
