Black magic and the Bible.

Hi readers, I do thank you for dropping by to join me on a discussion and look at black magic and the Bible and other spiritual practices that are clearly unacceptable to God, according to his written word, The Holy Bible. In this article, we examine different “established and accepted” spiritual practices that have existed for countless years. I call them “established and accepted” due to my perception of the world we live in today. Today I see a world that has “shrunk” dramatically and a global population that is constantly having thoughts and attitudes to God, the world around us and each other molded due to that skinny, shiny, flat piece of technology that we all carry on our persons at all times…our phones and the internet.

I mean, how easy it now these days to get “something, anything” established as the “norm” by broadcasting it to the masses enough times, in addition with various cultural and philosophical traditions, and leaving it up to the masses to debate/fight/sort it out for themselves to come up with an “established and accepted” idea. Hence, the reason I call the spiritual practices we will discuss today as being just that.

**Point to note before we go on…have a look at this definition of Abomination as listed in Google – “a thing that causes disgust or loathing”. Please do keep that definition in the back of your mind as we now go look at these practices in detail.
The biblical scripture basis that we will start with to frame our chat today, is taken from the fifth book of Moses in the Old Testament which is called Deuteronomy or the Pentateuch.

Deuteronomy 18:9-14.

Avoid Wicked Customs

9 “When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. 13 You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.

Let’s now have a look at these individual practices as well as a few others floating around today, see what they’re about and then compare that to God’s written word to show that these truly are detestable to the Lord, Our God.

The base of all this debased stuff

When you have a look at all the spiritual practices above, you can see a common thread that runs through all of that list. From the Christian world view, one can see the key base theme behind all of those practices is to assume that power, control and sovereignty over all creation is not from the one true living God but is wrestled away and left in the hands of mankind to create/imagine/devise/use. You only have to look at the world today to see how that’s going for all of us at present as well as our past and back into ancient history.

The Bible has a name for this and it is called idolatry. It is the worship of any other thing over the worship of the one true living God. It is worship of creation over the Creator. Here is what the Bible has to say clearly about this practice:

Exodus 20:3-5

I will start with this topic as it is most relevant to my ethnic background/heritage. I am an Indigenous Australian and we have long-held traditions on the use and practice of “black magic” even up to the present day at the time of writing this article. Of course for me being a “born again Christian” I have since put away all reverence/fear that I once had towards such practices and practitioners and now rest my faith in Jesus Christ alone as the only Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent God.

. You can be rest assured but, as real as the screen you are reading this on, that this practice still goes on today in metropolitan, regional as well as outback(remote) communities in Australia and I reckon I can safely say it is used for nothing but bad intentions towards the intended targets, other people. There are today however, practitioners and students of this study as real as e.g. there are students enrolling and studying at any university today.

As Australia has at least 100 separate indigenous nations(identities) and at least that amount again in separate language groups, I can only relate my own specific area/country’s experience with black magic and sorcery. In my language a practitioner of this is referred to under a variety of names. That person can be called a :

  • maidthalaig(a person that belongs to sorcery)
  • Puri-Puri man(same as above)
  • Witchdoctor
  • Star – traveler (because they were reputed to be able to astrally project across vast distances during the day or night and were reputed to be seen at night in transit)
  • Medicine Man

These people were always and still are a part of any local indigenous community/grouping in Australia and were/are called upon to do such tasks as :

  • heal people
  • help a man or woman with their amorous intentions towards a usually unwilling/unsuspecting person
  • get animals to kill another person
  • make sick, injure or kill another person directly
  • carry out funerary tasks in that societal grouping
  • predict future events
  • bless hunters with the appropriate conditions for a successful hunt
  • lead that societal grouping in the worship of animals/places

Wow, doesn’t some of that list of duties sound like any “priest” in any or most of the ancient religions we can read about today? There’s that common thread again….mankind and his vain imaginings…

Child sacrifice

The act referred to here “makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire” refers to certain past ancient pagan customs/religions that were quite willing to sacrifice their own children to their own deities to somehow better their own personal circumstances. Wouldn’t you think there was something seriously wrong with the reasoning in your own head that if you killed your own flesh and blood that this would somehow make things better for you?

God is really clear on what he thought of this practice in Jeremiah 32:35.

You hear a lot of folks say the bible is too hard to understand with too many thous, thees, therefores, etc. God is super clear in His expression here on what he thinks about child sacrifice…..” I didn’t tell em to do that and why would I, the thought never even crossed my mind!!….pretty clear huh!

soothsayers

fortune-tellers

tarot reading

  astrology

   horoscopes

Sooth Sayers, fortune-tellers, and tarot reading can pretty much be grouped together as their sole primary purpose of these activities are to predict the future for others. The Bible mentions the frequent use of these services quite regularly in the Old Testament. They were usually in the employ of royalty who were either :

  • truly unaware of who the one true living God was, see Daniel 2:1-3 and Daniel 2:46-47
  • or knew who their true God was but were too caught up in their own self-importance and other issues and basically ignored everything the Lord their God had commanded them. e.g. King Manasseh 2 Kings 21:2-7

Ouija boards/seances/mediums/calling on the dead

In these dreadful practices, we can see mankind has devised ways to attempt to communicate with the spirits of deceased persons. One classic example of this was King Saul seeking out and using a medium to enquire of the deceased Prophet Samuel on the outcome of a battle that he would be taking part in the following day. He claims that he needed to use the medium because God would not answer any of his prayers r.e. this coming battle. See 1 Samuel 28:1-19

According to Biblical scripture, there seems to be a real problem here with conjuring up these spirits. The problem here is the Bible clearly describes all people who die as being asleep for a time, then resurrected to eternal life or condemnation at the return of Jesus Christ to Earth. Check out the reference scriptures below:

At sleep:

Job 14:12

Job 3:11-13

Psalm 146:4

At the resurrection:

Daniel 12:2

John 5:28-29

John 6:39-40,

1 Corinthians 15:51-52

If we look at these two points logically we can see an obvious problem with the practice of “calling on the dead”, seances, mediums, etc straight away……..well I can… If the folks we are calling on are supposed to be “asleep” and unconscious and unaware of their present surroundings then who is answering the calls of countless mediums, seances, etc??

If it’s not them, then who is it? And how do you know if the spirit that responds has good or bad intentions towards you?

I mean really, when was the last time you heard of a seance where the conjured up spirit showed any valid form of I.D. or made any effort to prove to tell you or any others they were who they said they were??
This where it gets dangerous and that’s precisely why God says don’t do it friends because he loves us all and what Father wouldn’t want to protect their kids from harm??
I know that part of these sounds a bit comedic but you get my point don’t you??

God’s list of what not to do

A really clear summary of the totally outrageous abominations committed against God by the kingdom of Judah is found in 2 kings 23:2 -25. The kingdoms of Judah and Israel pretty much ticked every box on God’s list of what NOT to do in relation to every spiritual practice that is not biblical!! The shocking part about it is that :

the kingdom of Judah, and Israel, is frequently referred to by God in the Bible as His remnant (e.g. Isaiah 10:22), his chosen to people, the people He was counting on to honor the personal covenant (see Exodus 19:1-6) that he had made with Moses so many years before.

Some of this stuff was committed in the holiest of holy places of God, in his house, the temple of the Lord that King Solomon had built for God!! see 2 kings 21:7
Just imagine that, having friends or family that you loved and trusted and making a deal with them that you would 100% do “A” if they would keep their end of the bargain by doing “B”. Then you see them go back on everything they said and do the opposite? Is it no wonder that this would anger God?

Conclusion

Well, I hope that I have provided an interesting and informative look at the lengths/plans/imaginings mankind will chase and go to just to circumvent the true divine sovereignty and authority of the Lord Our God. Did you know that there is only one true cause of this ongoing rebellion against God and that is the innate sin that is present in all of us, you, me, and mankind past and present. It has been handed down to us generation to generation spiritually from the first rebellion against God in the garden of Eden as detailed in Genesis 3.

The good news is that the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, all of Us and of the Bible, has made a rescue and redemption plan for you and I in His risen Son Jesus Christ and are just as keen to find those that are looking for them!!

This promise is reiterated in the Holy Bible over and over again. This is a God-breathed, Holy Spirit inspired love letter to all past and present. The other awesome news is that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit treasure us, mankind, more than creation itself because we are truly family to Him, blood kin, and today he is calling to you and me to come home to Him. Will you come home today to Jesus Christ?

“Well how do I get there?” you might ask.

You are right in saying that the world has changed and today the world does seem a lot smaller compared to biblical times because of communication and information is a lot easier to come by or do. There are many religions that believe in the one god and would treat witchcraft or any other spiritual practices as wrong. In biblical times and for ages thereafter, spiritual trends would have taken years upon years to spread but in today’s world it’s at the click of a button, but yes I agree, that does not mean that its right.

    1. William Wymarra says:

Hi Lee, thanks heaps for your input here into this discussion. Yes, I do agree that as time marches on, ideas and thoughts are much easier to spread around at a quicker pace today. I think we are headed for trouble as a society as these ideas seem to get more and more extreme and acceptable in the mainstream. We need only look at any social media feed today to see its already happening.

  2. James says:

    Hello,

That’s a very powerful article there.

I Am amazed there is a lot of this practice still ongoing in Australia, I thought these practices are only here in Africa.

From my experience, the main aim of some of these black magic practices is to instill fear in the people so that they can control them. However, in our place, a medicine man may be used to refer to a person who uses herbs to cure various diseases without any black magic powers in it.

Anyway, thank you for your article and God bless you greatly.

    1. William Wymarra says:

Hi James, thanks for taking the time to check this article.Yes here in Australia amongst indigenous communities there are those folk that still follow these practices.I myself don’t agree with any of it as I have given my life to Christ and put my 100% confidence in Him as the only sovereign power that I should fear.I hope this article is able to spread the truth about these practices and free folk from it,hence my reason for writing it.

  3. Favorme says:

Wow, this is a wonderful kind of review. It is so informative and useful for people of faith. Because, as you rightly remarked about the effect of telephone and other tech devices in our culture and life. It has made information both the harmful, and nonharmful to be transmitted at a jet speed. And many people are consuming some harmful information without knowing it. I think that the devil feels so happy about all these boundaries that have been pulled down globally by the use of devices.

I was particularly touched by the quotation you gave on Deuteronomy 18:9-14. I think for any decent person and mostly for believers, that says it all concerning the standard of God concerning all these black magic and devilish practices. One has to guide his soul with the word of God. For faith can only come by hearing and reading the word of God.

Remember, as the signs of the end time draws closer most of the hidden activities and evil shall be on the increase. And it is already happening. May God show mercy on all the nations!

    Favorme.
